In Praise of Phil Jackson

When I thought about this year's Philadelphia Eagles, one name came to mind and it wasn't Michael Vick or Andy Reid--it was Phil Jackson. Wrong sport, wrong team, but I'll tell you the connection. Before the year started, the Eagles were the clear favorite to win the Super Bowl, yet they didn't even make the playoffs. I thought about Phil Jackson, because every year whether coaching the Bulls or the Lakers, they were always favored to win the NBA Championship, and amazingly enough, they almost always came through.

I never thought that Jackson got his due as one of the greatest coaches of all-time. How many times over the years did we hear that anybody can win with Jordan, Kobe, Shaq, but it is clearly not true. Some times the toughest expectations to beat are when you have such high expectations. In many people's mind, you can never win. If you don't win a championship then you failed. If you win, then it was expected. How often does a pre-season favorite in any sport (just look at last year---Phillies, Eagles, Heat---all overwhelming pre-season favorites) end up winning a championship? The percentage is not high, yet that is what Jackson did year in and year out.

Whatever it is--Zen Master, triangle offense, great motivator, good assistant coaches, it is clearly a winning formula. He deserves his due as an all-time great and not just a supplicant to Super Stars.. Plus, I am a fan because he coached the Albany Patroons for several years and I frequently saw him around town. On top of that, he played for my all-time favorite teams, the 1969-70 Knicks and '72-73 Knicks (something tells me he will be coaching the 2012-2013 Knicks).

I grew up a Jets fan. I lived ten minutes away from the Hofstra campus where they practiced. Why TIm Raines Should be in the Hall of Fame

I do not have a ballot for the Hall of Fame (though I do have a free lifetime pass). If I did have a vote, the first person I would check off would be Tim Raines. I have been a baseball fan my whole life, at times bordering on fanaticism, other times merely as an obsession.

The time of my greatest fanaticism was during the era when Tim Raines was a star. You can make a statistical argument for him---5th all time in steals (incredible 84.7 Steal percentage), he led N.L. in steals from 1981-'84 (two of those years he led the majors in steals), led the N.L. in assists by an outfielder in '81, 2605 career hits, .385 lifetime and seven straight all-star appearances (which should frankly be a very useful tool for hall of fame credentials). My test is not just the stat test, it is the smell test.

He faced the syndrome of being a great player in an era when the best whoever played in that position was dominating the sport. I am referring to the lead off position where Rickey Henderson broke every rule of power and speed (I still remember Mike Lupica saying that when the count was 2-0 on Henderson, you already knew he was going to end up on second base).

The smell test says that Raines should be a hall of famer. He was a tremendous lead off hitter, an all-time great base stealer, a terrific outfielder, good team guy and he even displayed some occasional pop with the bat. It is not his fault he played in the same era as Henderson and it should not deter hall of fame voters from giving him 75% of the vote.

Hopefully, he will get into the Hall....While I'm on the subject of unjust voting, let me bring up the name of Dave Parker. Why is he never considered for the Hall of Fame? In his playing days, he was one of the most dominant all around players. Oh well, that's an argument for another day.

Top One Hundred Songs of All-Time

Here it is, my list of the top one hundred songs of all-time. This is in honor of the WABC December 31st yearly countdown of the top one hundreds songs of the year. Before the list goes forward, a few caveats for the top 100 songs of all-time list. I love so many songs that I had to do some separating. I did not put any Broadway songs on the list (that will be a separate list), no Jazz (Ella and Louie, you will be on a separate list), no Gershwin Songs, No Sinatra songs (will be a separate list), no classical and no TV themes (Sorry Hawaii 5-O).

This list reflects my lifetime love of music and is very eclectic (Nat King Cole and AC/DC on the same list). This was a tough list to make with songs I am passionate about not making the final cut. Songs like Van Halen's Jump, The Beach Boy's--All Summer Long, Fleetwood Mac's--The Chain, The Doors---Touch Me, Blue Oyster Cults--Don't Fear the Reaper, Journey's Don't Stop Believing, Temptations--My Girl, Traffic's--Glad, Ozzy's Crazy Train, Stevie Wonder's For Once in my Life, Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven, Steely Dan's--Deacon Blues, Sly and the Family Stones--Hot Fun in the Summertime, Jethro Tull's, Locomotive Breath, Billy Joel's Only the Good Die Young, The Rascal's Good Lovin' Arrowsmith's Dream On, etc. Speaking of Dream on, the list of honorable mention goes on and on.

It was a tough decision list in terms of legendary bands as well---No Zeppelin, Arrowsmith, The Doors, Yes, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Bob Seeger, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, Prince, The Beach Boys, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Jethro Tull etc.

I also know I've forgotten songs I love, but this list will likely be updated in the future.

Worst song of all-time tops charts forty years ago

One of my fondest memories of the holiday season, when I was growing up on Long Island, was listening to WABC's annual recap of the top one hundred songs of the year. As a fanatic list maker, I would put a list together from 1 to 100. All week long, between Christmas and New Year's, WABC would randomly play the songs. Like a checklist with baseball cards, I would write down when Dan Ingram played Number 72 or Cousin Brucie played Number 16. Of course, if you missed any, you could make up for it, by listening on New Years Eve when they played all the songs in order from 100 to 1 or you could mail away for the list as I frequently did.

I decided to go back to forty years ago this week to review WABC's Top 100 of 1972. I was fourteen which would have been prime list making age. As I was looking through the list, I can actually remember listing some of the songs, and to my credit even back then, I knew that the number one song of the year was one of the worst of all-time.

Now as I look back with forty years perspective, not only do I think it was a terrible song, but I am comfortable rating it the worst song of all-time. What makes it worse is that Number 2 is one of the classic songs of rock and roll. A matter of fact, there were a lot of classic songs that year and a lot of bad ones as well.

Number 1 and Number 2

The Number 2 song from 1972 is a musical classic that is as recognized today as it was forty years ago. A rare song that withstood the test of time. It also pushed the envelope, by breaking the banality of three and a half minute songs. Without checking my facts and with the possible exception of Hey Jude, it has to be the longest running song that sold the most individual records. Ladies and gentlemen---I give you American Pie.

The Number 1 song of 1972 combined the worst lyrics and pitiful music. My version of torture would have to be locked in a room eating liver, watching endless repeats of My Favorite Martian and Lost in Space and listening to my choice for the worst song of all-time, Gilbert O'Sullivan's---Alone Again Naturally.

Now, I know there was a lot of drugs going on in the early 70's, but really, what was America thinking--Alone Again Naturally over American Pie. An irrevocable error in judgement that has had repercussions for decades (as soon as I know what those repercussions are, I will let you know).

List of Five Funniest Comedians of All-Time

Here is my list of the top five comedians of all-time.

5) Larry David---Anyone who has ever seen Curb Your Enthusiasm knows the genius of Larry David. I have never watched a show where I consistently laugh and I'm not talking giggle laughs, I'm talking belly laughs. My favorite though is his interaction with Richard Lewis, his childhood friend/nemesis. As they are ad libbing their scenes, you can actually see them laughing. All the other character interactions are hilarious as well---Jeff, Susie, Leon, Ted, Cheryl, His Father, Marty Funkhausen and his cousin Andy ("That's alright, I already had turkey for lunch").

4) Robert Klein---The man is a comic genius. No knock on George Carlin who was a funny guy, but I thought the best and most relevant comic of that era was Robert Klein. Still the funniest single show I ever saw in my life was the first Robert Klein HBO Special on New Year's Eve. My barometer for humor is uncontrolled belly laughs and I must have set a record the night I saw that show. The fact that I can still remember the routines thirty years later is a reflection of his genius ('Hey you're from the Bronx, do you know Tony Jones?")

3) Mel Brooks---Are you kidding me? The Producers, Blazing Saddles, 2000 Year Old Man,Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, Silent Movie, Robin Hood Men in Tights (alright even geniuses are entitled to a mulligan). The body of work speaks to his genius. Even if he didn't create these movies, he would still be hilarious. Just check out any interview he has ever done--he can't help but make you laugh. It is clear, that unlike number 2 on this list, he never took himself seriously.

2) Woody Allen---I am conflicted because he is clearly the most brilliant comedian/writer I have ever seen, but he is also a very bizarre guy who has wasted his genius in the last twenty years on movies that are not worthy of his brilliances. I know most film critics applaud his post Manhattan days (Interiors possibly being the worst movie of all-time), but I miss them desperately. Bananas, Love and Death and Annie Hall were written by a comic genius (Sleeper, Everything You Wanted to know about Sex, Take the Money and Run and Manhattan also get honorable mention). Bananas was my awakening to comic brilliance. I saw the movie as a teenager and it showed me a world of what it must be like to be the funniest person alive. I thought that Love and Death was his most underrated hilarious movie ("Look there's our village idiot--What did you do, place?") and never got as much praise as his other movies. Annie Hall is in a class by itself, "Hey I know you, you're Alvy Singer, I saw you on the Carson", "You know nothing of my work, How you got to be an expert in anything is beyond me". The lines just keep coming. He would go down as the greatest of all-time, if he kept to his comic calling and not decided to change his mind set after Manhattan.

1) The Marx Brothers. I have to put them collectively on the list with the exception of Gummo and Zeppo (though Zeppo deserves some recognition especially when he was taking up with Connie Bailey, the college widow in Horse Feathers). There were three comedy awakenings in my life---Bananas, Blazing Saddles and Horse Feathers (though I ended up liking Duck Soup even more but that is like comparing Willie Mays to Mickey Mantle). When I first saw Horse Feathers as a teenager, I expected to think of the Marx Brothers the same way I thought of The Stooges (mildly amusing especially with Curley), The Bowery Boys (occasional laugh but generally desperation television on Sunday Morning) or Abbott and Costello (I don't really get it, but it passed the time during a Yankee rain delay), but instead I saw three geniuses at work.

One of my favorite recent memories was when I had my son watch Horse Feathers with me. He was a little cynical at first but when he saw the scene with Groucho as a professor at Huxley College and Harpo and Chico shooting spit balls at him, he was hooked. Then when they did the famous Sword Fish with Harpo bringing in the Sword and the Fish, he was on the floor. It just goes to show you that funny is funny (whether it is from yesterday or 80 years ago) and their madcap irreverence is timeless.

Horse Feathers also gave me my two all-time best fantasy football names (Huxley College and Mullin and McCarty) as well as the name of my one my childhood cats--Pinky, named after Harpo. I have spent all this time talking about Horse Feathers, but their genius goes well beyond to classics like Duck Soup ("What day do you shadow him? Shadowday"), Monkey Business, Day at the Races, The Cocoanuts, Animal Crackers and Night at the Opera. They kind of jumped the shark after Day at the Races, though I did like moments in At the Circus and Go West. They are clearly the kinds of comedy, at least in my book.

Honorable Mention---Neil Simon---It was hard to fit him in to a category since he was never a performer, just the most brilliant comic playwright of all-time: Phil Silvers---one of those guys who made you laugh the second they walked into a scene and Sgt. Bilko is still the funniest comedy show of all-time. Jerry Seinfeld is also hilarious and along with Larry David, the creator of a brilliant TV show (third only to Bilko and Curb Your Enthusiasm as the funniest TV show) . Also love Chris Rock--His riffs on sports and the Mets in particular are among the funniest I ever heard, maybe because they hit so close to home. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau--if you want to see funny, watch them work together in The Odd Couple or The Fortune Cookie). Also can't forget Jack Benny and Bob Hope. There are others I am sure I'm missing, but that's what I love about lists.

Even though I live and die with the Mets, I am still a pure baseball fan, and in my mind there is nothing like the World Series. Growing up, I can remember running home from school to catch the World Series games. I remember faking a cold in fifth grade (yes, Principal Jane, I finally confess) so I could watch Game Seven of the '68 World Series between the Cardinals and the Tigers. Top Ten Basketball Players of All Time

Here is my list of the ten greatest basketball players of all-time in order. Let the debate begin.

Honorable Mention---Shaquille O'Neal, Julius Erving, Elgin Baylor, Hakeem Olajuwon, John Havlicek, Moses Malone

10) Jerry West---Though I only caught him at the tail end of his career, he was one of the best pure shooters I ever saw. He would have averaged at least five more points a game if they had the three point rule in the 60's

9) Kobe Bryant---He has earned his ranking as a top ten player. There are few players in the last twenty five years who have been as clutch as he has. Game after game, year after year, he hits the big shot when he needs to plus he is the ultimate lock down defenders in big situations.

8) Tim Duncan---Without a doubt, I would say that he is the most underrated player of my lifetime. All he has done is score, rebound, play great defense and hustle. He is also the ultimate team player who cares little about getting credit. I wish he could be cloned. I coached CYO basketball for several years and would always tell the kids to watch a Spurs game and see the way that Duncan carried himself on and off the court. A true role model.

7) Oscar Robertson---Again, like West, I saw him at the tail end of his career, but what a career. He was the dominant guard of his era and was a regular triple double guy before anyone even counted that stat. P.S.---For those young guys talking about the NBA all-time greats, his name is Robertson, not Robinson.

6) Larry Bird---Dirk Nowitski may come close, but Bird was still the best shooting big man I ever saw. Even though he wasn't a center, with the exception of Bill Walton, he was also the best passing big man I ever saw as well. There was nothing he couldn't do on the court including trash talk with the best of them.

5) Wilt Chamberlain---Talent wise, there were few who could ever compare to him. Can you imagine scoring fifty points as a season average or deciding that you wanted to lead the league in assists, so you decided overnight to become a dominant passer. Still for all his talent, he loses points for not being an all-time clutch player. He had his great moments and a few championships under his belt, but any player who misses key stretches of big playoff games, without injuries, cannot be in the top four of all-time.

4) Kareem Abdul Jabbar---Hard to say that a center acknowledged as an all-time great by virtually everyone, is underrated, but it is true in Jabbar's case. He never gets enough credit for his accomplishments. It is as if because of his height, he was expected to be great. Well, there are lots of big men in the history of the NBA and almost none of them could carry Jabbar's lunch. On top of which his sky hook is still the most unblockable shot of all-time. Give him his due as the second greatest big man of all-time.

3) Magic Johnson- It was almost unfair to pair the third and fourth best player of all-time on the same team....Throw in Hall of Famer James Worthy and you have one of the greatest teams of all-time. I have watched a lot of basketball in my life and have seen some great passers like Clyde (I had to get in my obligatory 1970 Knicks reference), John Stockton, Steve Nash and the amazing Jason Kidd, but there is no one who compares to Magic. I tell my son that every time I saw Magic bring the ball up the court, you would expect something unbelievable to happen and it usually did. And to top it off he was 6 foot 8. Scary good.

2) Bill Russell---Again, mostly before my time, but come on--look at those championships. I know the NBA was not filled with lots of teams back then, but I didn't see any other team from that era close to being dominant. Sure his stats were not gaudy, but they meant nothing to him. Simply put, he is the biggest winner in sports history. He was the greatest defensive player of all-time, and the man who helped parlay teamwork into countless championships. Keep the big numbers, I'll take Russell on my team any time.

1) Michael Jordan---No brainer. I can't imagine anyone who ever saw Michael Jordan play in his prime could disagree with me. He was capable of doing anything on the court. Remember he started his career as a dunking machine, and the knock was he had no outside shot. That quickly changed and he became the deadliest scorer of all-time. Again, if you weigh in the clutch factor, there was no one you would rather see have the ball in a big situation. Simply put, he is NBA royalty, and I can't imagine anyone could ever dethrone him.

Survey Results: Who is the Greatest Quarterback of All Time?

This week's survey asked the question of who is the greatest quarterback of all-time. Though hardly a scientific poll, the results were a little surprising. For example, there was no love at all for John Elway. He got no votes, which is a shocker to me. Personally, I agree with the results of Joe Montana as the greatest quarterback. He was first in my mind, but I didn't see Unitas till late in his career.

Top Five Earth, Wind and Fire Songs

Last night my wife and I went to one of the most fun concerts I have seen in recent years---Earth, Wind and Fire (Check out my top five favorite Earth, Wind and Fire songs) at Tanglewood. It is their 40th anniversary celebration (man, that makes me feel old). They sound exactly the way they have sounded for years. They have always been one of my favorite more underrated groups (just below the top tier, but definitely in my music Hall of Fame). As a passionate list maker, several of their songs have always been among my consistent top one hundred including Fantasy, Boogie Wonderland, Reasons, Got to Get You Into My Life (even better then the Beatles version) and Lets Groove Tonight. (hint---I did not list my favorite one so you will have to read this blog all the way to the end to find out).

All these songs and many of their others are just fun songs and even their emotional songs are catchy enough not to be sappy (Reasons, After the Love Is Gone). Now after forty years, I finally got to see them in concert. Some times in the past when I have gone to concerts and heard performers singing a song I love, I have actually been disappointed. Not true with E, W, F. The memories of all these great songs will be even more enhanced after seeing them in concert. We actually got to be near the stage at the end and dance along(not that what I do is considered dancing, but then again many of the other 50 somethings dancing in the aisle were equally as unimpressive)...Highly recommend to anyone.

Why Is Everyone Picking on LeBron?

So let me get this straight---LeBron James throws a "Magic Johnson" like bounce pass in the waning seconds of Game Three, to Chris Bosh. Bosh, one of the games top scorers, is set up with an open twelve footer which is cake for most NBA Players especially a shooter as good as Bosh. Heat win the game, but the story after the game is that LeBron is not clutch enough to be the star in the big moment. Are you kidding me? What does the guy have to do to get in people's good graces.

Today, I here on the radio that Michael would have never let someone else take a big shot at crunch time in the playoffs. Are you kidding me? Without a doubt Michael is the greatest of all-time, but look back at the Bulls run and see how often in clutch time he penetrated and dished to an open Steve Kerr.

The other argument of the anti-LeBrons is that, well he can never be truly an all-time great because he plays along another superstar in Dwayne Wade. Hello? Who did Magic Johnson, the greatest point guard of all-time play along side--only one of the top ten players of all-time in Kareem. Bird had three Hall of Famers in McHale, Parish and Dennis Johnson. The great Bill Russell always played with Hall of Famers from Sam Jones, to K.C. Jones, John Havlicek, Tom Heinsohn, etc. To say that LeBron playing with Wade would some how tarnish his image makes no sense.

I am rooting for the Mavs to win the series, but to deny the greatness of LeBron James is just plain ridiculous.
